Having worked as an impact investor, fundraiser, media consultant and now brand leader, I've learned that cross functional experience brings more to the table than one thinks...

Summing it up in four simple points:

—————————————

You have picked the best ingredients from every restaurant. Now create that unique dish.

A line from the show “The Bear” conveys this idea better than any corporate speak:

"I think that's what makes a restaurant special. It's not the food, it's the people. And you know, you go to all these different places, and you work with all these different chefs, and you take a little piece of everybody with you. And then, when you finally open your own place, it's just this beautiful patchwork of everyone you've ever loved."

Irrespective of industry, finance logic remains the same

My finance professor once told me, if a genie ever shows up, I should wish for the ability to accurately predict revenue. On the other hand, costs require no such magic.

However, since genies are uncommon, try this instead:

1) Plan costs diligently

2) Determine the revenue you need

3) See where reality lands -> adjust accordingly

PS: It's a whole different ball game when modelling for startups ;)

—————————————

An opportunity to own your unique perspective

Often, being an outsider means you have a unique perspective. Share it!

—————————————

A license to ask (obvious) questions

You are new. Ask the big hairy questions which others hesitate to.
